For centuries Turkey was perceived in Europe as a cultural outsider and a military threat. That changed after the collapse and division of the Ottoman Empire.
The newly established Republic of Turkey entered the process of secularisation, modernisation and Europeanisation aimed at including it in the Western institutional architecture. However, under the rule of the AKP and Recep Tayyip Erdogan much of this process has been reversed. Over the last years Turkey has been steadily drifting away from the West, driven by Erdogan’s ambition for world hegemony of the Islamic people. What does that mean for the region and beyond? What conditions need to be fulfilled for Erdogan to achieve his goal?
