Russia and Regional Security

We are currently observing many events with potentially huge impact on world politics. Brexit referendum and the latest US presidential election have signaled a backlash against globalization. The upcoming presidential election in France and federal election in Germany may severely undermine the European Union. Located in the European neighbourhood, the Eastern Mediterranean region is more unstable than ever. The Syrian civil war is entering its sixth year, Islamist radicalization has led to even greater terrorist threat in the region and beyond, and Turkey, the West’s most important regional ally, is on the fast track to dictatorship. From the Russian perspective, we are currently witnessing the collapse of the so-called liberal world order, which was destined to fail from the very beginning. How does Russia see itself in relation to these developments? What are the prospects of Russia-US relations under Trump’s presidency? What is Russia’s position on various aspects of the Cyprus problem? How does Russia see Turkey’s role in the Syrian conflict? What future in the post-settlement Syria does it envision for the Kurds? These and other questions are answered by the Russian ambassador to Cyprus, H.E. Stanislav Osadchiy.
